Online Class: Expressive Florals in Oil

Experiment with oil paint’s transparent and sculpting properties in this exciting workshop that explores negative painting. Push and pull values by both adding and subtracting paint from your canvas, while bringing energy to your floral compositions. You will also have an opportunity to play with thinning your oils to create loose, textural, and dynamic marks that are similar to qualities in watercolor painting.

Supplies needed for this class: 

• Oil paint (Recommended starter set: Winsor & Newton Winton Oil Color Paint, Basic Set, 10 x 21ml Tubes) Includes: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue, Yellow Ochre, Viridian Hue, French Ultramarine, Phthalo Blue, Cadmium Red Deep Hue, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Ivory Black  
• Solvent (Gamsol or Nontoxic Ecosolve from Natural Earth Paint)
• Variety of Brushes (Acrylic or oil)
• Palette Knife
• Brush cleaning container with lid–or glass jar with lid
• Palette (parchment paper or piece of glass from a frame)
• Canvas or panel (Canvas board or panel recommended) 
• Recommended: Refined Linseed Oil, 75ml

Note on Oil Paints: It is always recommended to work in a ventilated area when using oil paint and solvents. Oil paint is permanent/staining to clothes and other fabrics. Avoid direct contact with skin. At the beginning of class, the instructor will also go over best practices for using oil paint safely.

This class is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. Children are welcome to participate alongside their adults.

This program will take place via the video conferencing app–ZOOM. Details for accessing the Zoom meeting will be with your receipt upon registering and again sent via email the day prior. Please register in advance in order to access the program.

About the Instructor:

A passionate artist and experienced educator, Morgan Jones has spent the last 9 years developing these crafts. She seeks to explore how art can serve as a medium to move us both individually and communally. Her time teaching in public schools, juvenile detention, and community centers has deepened her belief that art is a fundamental means of knowing, connecting, and transforming. In addition to Fine Arts, Morgan studied Art Education at Texas State University as well as Criminal and Social Justice at the College of the Rockies in BC Canada. Morgan’s professional painting practice focuses on plein-air landscape assemblage and multiple exposure oil paintings that call into question ideas of impermanence, memory and conservation. After spending a year living on the road, developing her art from her mobile travel trailer studio, she has settled in Santa Fe to split her time between teaching and creating. Find more about her work on her website or on Instagram at @painting.nomad
