Arts Alive: Poetry in the Garden

Join us at O’Keeffe’s Home & Studio in Abiquiú for a free evening of poetry! Spend the evening with two poets who will share a selection from their work and invite you into their creative processes, inspirations, and lived experiences. As a special keepsake, audience members will receive a printed poem—a piece of the night to take home.

Poets:

Santana Shorty is a writer and poet from northern New Mexico. She received her BA from Stanford University and her MFA in Creative Writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts. Her work focuses on New Mexican landscape and culture, and multiracial upbringing and love. Her writing has been published in New Mexico Magazine, El Palacio Magazine, and in the anthology Water Bodies: Love Letters to the Most Abundant Substance on Earth from Torrey House Press. Currently, she is working on her first novel. She is a member of the Navajo Nation and lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Fatima van Hattum is a writer and mother from Abiquiu, New Mexico. Fatima has a PhD in Educational Thought and Sociocultural Studies and works as Senior Director of Research and Strategy at New Mexico’s statewide women’s foundation. Her poetry has been featured in: CALYX Journal, Chapter House Journal, Portland Review, anthologies from Red Hen Press and Torrey House Press, and others. Her academic scholarship focuses on Muslim cultural studies. Her forthcoming book, Muslims on the Mesa: The History of Abiquiu’s Dar al Islam Community, will be published by University of New Mexico Press. Fatima lives in Santa Fe, is Muslim, and has a wonderful family and complicated background.

With support from the Witter Bynner Foundation for Poetry, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is pleased to present a four-part reading series that will bring poetry and dialogue into a welcoming, accessible space. The Arts Alive: Poetry at the Museum series will consist of four events, each of which will feature two women poets who live and work in New Mexico. At each event, the poets will read selected pieces and will talk with one another about their process, their work, and their experience. We invite anyone who has a curiosity about poetry to join us for any or all of these free events. As a special memento, audience members will receive a special letterpress print of poetry written by the event’s headliners (while supplies last). These have been created in collaboration with the poets and Etc. Letterpress.
