Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Georgia O’Keeffe Red Poppy commemorative stamp featuring O’Keeffe’s Red Poppy, 1927! Join us for a conversation with graphic designer Margaret Bauer, who worked in collaboration with the USPS on the creation of this iconic stamp. Bauer will share what it was like to be a part of the project, what the design process involved, and how the final iteration of the stamp came to be. Bauer will also discuss her career as a graphic designer working with museums, university publishers, and the US Postal Service.

About the Speaker

Margaret Bauer founded Margaret Bauer Graphic Design in 2007. Bauer’s studio is based in Washington, DC, with a focus on museum and university press publications. Before opening the studio, Bauer was Design Manager of the Publishing Office at the National Gallery of Art, where she worked from 1994 to 2006. Bauer studied Russian and Soviet history at Yale University and then earned an MFA in graphic design from Yale School of Art. Bauer is an adjunct professor at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University, where she has taught publication design. She has also worked with the United States Postal Service to create stamps, including sheets celebrating modern American architecture and American industrial design.

Every project provides opportunities for learning about new topics, new techniques, new typefaces, and new materials. Bauer enjoys the research phase as much as the actual making of each book. Bauer relishes the collaboration that bookmaking entails. The most successful books emerge when that collaboration begins early and remains integral throughout the project’s evolution.

Bauer’s work has been recognized with awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, American Association of Museums, Association of University Presses, I.D. magazine, Stiftung Buchkunst, and the New York Book Show.
