Abiquiu Land Grant, the O’Keeffe and LANL announce scholarship
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—April 5, 2018 (Abiquiú, NM) — The Abiquiú Land Grant Board, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Foundation proudly announce the creation of the Abiquiú Land Grant–Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Scholarship. The Scholarship will support students who are descendants of an Abiquiú land grant family. Inaugural awards will be a part of the LANL Foundation’s existing Regional College/Returning Student Scholarship (RCRS) program. These scholarships are one-year educational awards of $1,000.
“We are excited to collaborate with the O’Keeffe Museum and LANL Foundation on this endeavor,” says David Archuleta, Board President of the Abiquiú Land Grant Board of Directors. “Georgia O’Keeffe lived in Abiquiú for nearly forty years,” adds Robert A. Kret, Director of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. “She had a long legacy of supporting the community while she was alive, and the donors want to continue her philanthropy with this scholarship fund.” Reflecting the past and creating bright futures are key to the project’s purpose. Says Archuleta, “Abiquiú history is a story of determined individuals; the scholarships support that tradition, and invest in our region’s future.”
The RCRS scholarships are for non-traditional students returning to formal education after a hiatus for other pursuits. The students must plan to enroll in a two-year degree or certificate program, or presently be in such a program following a gap in their schooling. Eligible students must also be descendants of an Abiquiú land grant family, and have earned a high school diploma or GED.
The LANL Foundation, its Board of Directors and the Scholarship Advisory Committee partner with outside groups and individuals to create and manage privately funded scholarships. John McDermon,
Scholarship Program Manager, is pleased to grow the RCRS program and to support the Abiquiú land grant families. “Returning to school is one of the best investments a person can make towards a better future. Scholarships help address financial obstacles to these opportunities,” says McDermon. Regional College/Returning Student Scholarship applications open this week, and will be accepted through May 31, 2018, on the LANL Foundation website,
www.lanlfoundation.org/scholarships. Awardees will receive notification in July. A second round of RCRS scholarships are awarded annually with applications accepted again starting October 1, 2018.
Descendants of the Abiquiú Land Grant pursuing bachelor’s degrees will also have the opportunity to apply for the Abiquiú Land Grant-Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Scholarship through LANL Foundation’s General 4-Year Undergraduate Scholarships program in the fall.
