Georgia O’Keeffe collected natural objects like feathers, bones, shells, and rocks, which she kept in her homes and used as subjects for her paintings. In this workshop, learn to make a ceramic curio shelf from micaceous clay for displaying your own inspiring collection of objects.

Rich in mica mineral particles, micaceous clay is a special material that can be found in specific mountainous areas in Northern New Mexico. For generations, this clay has been used by Southwest pueblos like Taos and Picuris for making functional vessels and, in recent years, has become a striking medium for contemporary ceramic artists. In this class, participants will have a unique opportunity to explore the shimmering, glittery qualities of this clay, which is special to our New Mexico landscape. By the end of this class, each participant will have created one small curio shelf, which will be ready to pick up in three weeks after it has been dried and fired by Amber. There will be natural items available in this workshop for you to select to go with your completed shelf.

NOTE: The pieces created in this class will need to dry and undergo firing by Amber after the workshop. They will be ready for pick-up at the Museum after up to 3 weeks. Shipping finished pieces is also an option for out-of-town participants.

This class is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. Children are welcome to participate alongside their adults.

This class will meet at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s Creativity Studio, which is located on the corner of Marcy Street and Grant Avenue, Santa Fe, NM. Registrants will be notified 24 hours in advance if the lesson is to be canceled.
