The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Honors Gloria Steinem

September 3, 2026

Gloria Steinem, a leading writer, lecturer, editor, and major political advocate, passed away on September 2nd, 2026. Steinem led the 1960s and 70s women’s liberation movement and advocated for economic independence, legal rights, protections, and much more. For decades, she devoted her life to advocacy and equal opportunity.

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum has long recognized Steinem’s impact and legacy. In 2009, the Museum honored Steinem as a Woman of Distinction, a series recognizing contemporary women who have made outstanding contributions to society.

As we reflect on Steinem’s extraordinary life, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum joins countless others in thanking Steinem for her courage and leadership.
