O’Keeffe in the Landscape
Join Giustina Renzoni, Curator of Historic Properties, for a talk about the latest exhibition at the Abiquiu Welcome Center, O’Keeffe in the Landscape.
At the age of 74, Georgia O’Keeffe river rafted for the first time. By this stage in her life, she was an avid camper, and rafting down the Colorado River was a welcomed challenge. Starting in 1910, Georgia O’Keeffe made a habit of immersing herself in the wilderness through frequent camping trips and other outdoor excursions. When she began traveling to New Mexico several years later, her camping trips became more frequent and more remote. These outings deepened her relationship with the natural world and coincided with the rise of outdoor recreation in the United States.
The exhibition, O’Keeffe in the Landscape, explores O’Keeffe’s camping trips through the photography of her friends and the personal effects she brought with her on her trips, including camping gear and clothing.
It will be on view at The O’Keeffe Welcome Center in Abiquiú, New Mexico from April 19, 2022 through April 11, 2023. The exhibition is free and open to the general public.
