Join us as we explore traditional, Japanese-style, woodcut relief printmaking in this two-session workshop.

Early in her career, Georgia O’Keeffe studied with the painter and printmaker Arthur Wesley Dow. In addition to his work as an artist and educator, Dow was the assistant curator for Japanese art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and his work with the museum’s collection of ukiyo-e woodblock prints heavily influenced his work on composition—including a book entitled Composition which had a tremendous impact on a generation of artists from O’Keeffe to Charles Burchfield and beyond.

Registration will automatically enroll you in BOTH sessions

In the first class session (Saturday, December 14, 9 AM–12:30 PM) we will explore the history of the medium along with fundamentals like composition, line, color, contrast, simplification, variation, and layering. We will also learn first-hand about the physicality, simplicity, and versatility of natural wood as we move on to the processes of carving, inking, and printing.

In the second class session (Sunday, December 15, 9 AM–12 PM) we will reconvene in the classroom space to continue working on the printmaking projects started in session 1. By the end of session 2, each student will complete a series of at least three prints to take home.

This workshop is great for anyone interested in printmaking as a medium, looking to build skills in printmaking, and/or already has experience in printmaking that they want to expand on. It is also an excellent opportunity to learn about one of the many artistic sources that influenced Georgia O’Keeffe and her contemporaries.

This class is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. Children are welcome to participate alongside their adults.

Space is limited, reservations required. Please email contact@gokm.org or call 505-946-1000 for assistance with event registration.

This class will meet in front of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, 217 Johnson Street, Santa Fe, NM. Registrants will be notified 24 hours in advance if the lesson is to be canceled.
