Online Class: Abstracting Florals

Draw inspiration from O’Keeffe’s close-up floral studies to create your own vibrant floral abstraction. This class will begin with an examination of O’Keeffe’s Red Canna, 1924 and a subsequent sketching exercise to create an original composition. Participants will then follow along with the instructor to paint a final piece focusing on color mixing, value balance, and dynamic movement. 

The instructor will be teaching in oils, but feel free to use another medium if you do not need media application instruction.

This class is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. Children are welcome to participate alongside their adults.

Space is limited, reservations required.

This program will take place via the video conferencing app – ZOOM. Details for accessing the Zoom meeting will be with your receipt upon registering and again sent via email the day prior. Please register in advance in order to access the program.

Supplies needed for this class (if using oils):

• Oil paint (Recommended starter set: Winsor & Newton Winton Oil Color Paint, Basic Set, 10 x 21ml Tubes- available on amazon) Includes: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue, Yellow Ochre, Viridian Hue, French Ultramarine, Phthalo Blue, Cadmium Red Deep Hue, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Ivory Black  
• Solvent (Gamsol or Eco-alternative Sennelier Oil Thinner)
• Variety of Brushes (Acrylic or oil)
• Palette Knife
• Brush cleaning container w/ lid – or Glass jar w/ lid
• Palette (parchment paper or piece of glass from a frame)
• Strathmore 400 Series Oil Painting Pad 9″X12″-10 Sheets -62430309 (or other oil painting papers or canvas)
• Recommended: Refined Linseed Oil, 75ml

About the Instructor:

A passionate artist and experienced educator, Morgan Jones has spent the last 9 years developing these crafts. She seeks to explore how art can serve as a medium to move us both individually and communally. Her time teaching in public schools, juvenile detention, and community centers has deepened her belief that art is a fundamental means of knowing, connecting, and transforming. In addition to Fine Arts, Morgan studied Art Education at Texas State University as well as Criminal and Social Justice at the College of the Rockies in BC Canada. Morgan’s professional painting practice focuses on plein-air landscape assemblage and multiple exposure oil paintings that call into question ideas of impermanence, memory and conservation. $10 minimal fee.

$20 covers the cost of the class.

$30 covers the cost of the class, plus a contribution to support educational programs.
