In this introductory class, journey into the world of printmaking by exploring the foundational principles and techniques used in block printing.

Early in her career Georgia O’Keeffe studied with the painter and printmaker Arthur Wesley Dow. In addition to his work as an artist and educator, Dow was the assistant curator for Japanese art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and his work with that museum’s collection of ukiyo-e woodblock prints heavily influenced his work on composition—including a book entitled Composition which had a tremendous impact on a generation of artists from O’Keeffe to Charles Burchfield and beyond.

In this class participants will begin with a short tour of the galleries for inspiration, and will then head to the classroom where they will have the opportunity to explore block printing through a combination of in-person technique demonstration and practice with contemporary linocut block printing. This workshop is great for anyone interested in printmaking as a medium, looking to build skills in printmaking, and/or already has experience in printmaking that they want to expand on.
