Cady Wells: A Life Made in New Mexico

Cady Wells was a painter and patron of the arts who settled in New Mexico in the 1930s.^[1] Christian Waguespack, the Curator of 20th Century Art at the New Mexico Museum of Art, shares an overview of Wells’ life in the Southwest and the development of his distinctive aesthetic style from loose lyrical landscape to dense dark abstractions.

Waguespack examines major stages in Wells’ artistic development and explores the impact of influences including his relationship with Georgia O’Keeffe, the stained glass windows of Chartes, and anxiety around atomic testing in Los Alamos.
