Description
Co-published with the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Georgia O’Keeffe: In New Light offers unexpected entry points into the work and life of the famed artist. Over forty years after her death, O’Keeffe has remained a fixture in American culture in ways few artists achieve. Her artwork continues to inspire younger generations, while her persona—the way she lived, her homes, her relationship to the New Mexico landscape—persists in the collective imagination, influencing fashion, interior design, and countless people to move to the rural Southwest. In New Light was conceived as a way to ask why that might be. What is it about her that continues to resonate, and what are the salient questions about O’Keeffe’s work and legacy worth asking today? What are the critiques to be raised and examined? This volume illuminates these contemporary perspectives on and insights into one of the seminal cultural figures of the twentieth century.
In addition to a chronological selection of O’Keeffe’s artwork that spans her entire career and brings together both significant masterworks and lesser-known pieces, In New Light includes a roundtable conversation with a group of visual artists, curators, writers, poets, and art historians that foregrounds the ways in which O’Keeffe has been a part of their respective practices and the aspects of who she was and what she made that they continue to interrogate. The participants in this conversation are Jen Bervin, Makeda Best, Kirsten Pai Buick, Josh T Franco, Michael Namingha, Rebecca Solnit, and Amy Von Lintel. The publication concludes with a selection of portraits of O’Keeffe by Alfred Stieglitz and other photographers that captures her keen awareness of her own image and a clear sense of collaboration between photographer and model.
