Replicated from the antique Buddha Hand mounted in Georgia O’Keeffe’s Abiquiú home, this reproduction celebrates the iconography of the hand as a long held symbol of creativity, healing, fearlessness, protection, friendship and generosity across many cultures.

During a trip to Thailand in the spring of 1959, O’Keeffe purchased the antique from Monogram, a business specializing in “Thai Antiques, Objets D’Art, Souvenirs and Jewelry”. Located in the landmark Erawan Hotel (1956-1987), the antique store was owned by Connie Mangskau, a successful business-woman who was well-known for hosting legendary parties in her home for an array of visiting movie stars, politicians and royalty.

Letters between Monogram and O’Keeffe, found in the O’Keeffe Museum Archive, indicate that the original Buddha Hand, having arrived damaged, was eventually replaced by a similar one dating from the 12th or 14th century which to this day is displayed in Georgia O’Keeffe’s home.

Measures approximately 9″ tall and 3″ at widest; resin composite. Includes story card and mounting hardware.
