Research Center
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is dedicated to the artistic legacy of Georgia O’Keeffe, her life, American Modernism, and public engagement. The Research Center is committed to the Museum’s mission and to the study and interpretation of American Modernism from the late nineteenth-century to the present.
The Research Center sponsors research in American Modernism by awarding stipends to historians in the fields of art, architecture and design, literature, music and photography. The Research Center opened in July 2001 as the only museum-related research facility in the world dedicated to the study of American Modernism. |

Research Center Facts
- Housed in the historic late 19th century Bergere House at 135 Grant Street in Santa Fe, the Research Center is located several blocks from the Santa Fe Plaza and one block from the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. The renovated building and a new structure were designed by Gluckman Mayner Architects of New York.
- The Research Center offers a quiet, contemplative, minimalist environment. The esthetics of the Research Center evokes the esthetics of O’Keeffe’s houses in Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch.
- A gift from the Barbara Goede Family Foundation has enhanced the stunning garden of the Research Center with flowering plants that were subjects in Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings.
- The Research Center collections include the libraries O'Keeffe maintained at her Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch houses, archives with a wide variety of documents and correspondence pertaining to O'Keeffe, and the personal, tangible property O'Keeffe owned at the time of her death in 1986, such as artist materials and found objects.
- The Research Center opened on July 13, 2001 during a three-day symposium entitled "Defining American Modernism". The Research Center has hosted six symposia – three onsite: “Defining American Modernism” (2001), “Painting and Photography in American Art: Sources, Ideas, and Influences, 1890s to the Present” (2006), and “Challenging 1945: Exploring Continuities in American Art, 1890s to the Present” (2011) – and three online: "The Modern/Postmodern Dialectic: American Art and Culture, 1965-2000" (2001), “The 1980’s: An Internet Conference” (2003), and “Museums of Tomorrow: An Internet Conference” (2005). The online conferences are archived on our website.
- Up to six stipends are awarded annually to scholars pursuing projects related to the study of American Modernism. Areas of study include art history, architectural history and design, literature, music and photography.
- Georgia O’Keeffe’s house at Abiquiu, as well as the stunning landscape configurations around her properties in both Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch, offer scholars opportunities for the further understanding of O’Keeffe’s art and esthetic.
- The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center Book Prize is a cash prize of $5,000 that awarded every three years to the author(s) of a book on some aspect of American modernism, including architecture, criticism, design, methodology, painting, photography, sculpture, and related subjects. - Barbara Buhler Lynes was the former Emily Fisher Landau Director of the Research Center and the Curator of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Lynes is a scholar of American Modernism and the leading expert on O'Keeffe. She has written extensively on Georgia O'Keeffe and is the author of Georgia O'Keeffe: Catalogue Raisonné (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1999).
