Why Joseph Cornell?
December 09, 2009 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
RESEARCH CENTER SCHOLAR LECTURE The American artist Joseph Cornell (1903–1972) has been the subject of scholarly and public attention for decades. His most recognizable artwork exists in the form of boxed assemblages, but he was also an avid collagist, diarist, and filmmaker. He has been the subject of numerous academic and popular studies, including a biography, a song, and several plays, and his persona has appeared in novels by writers as diverse as William Gibson and Michael Redhill. What is so interesting about this man and his work? Stephanie Taylor will try to explain the appeal of the artist, who has been the focus of her research for over a decade. STEPHANIE TAYLOR, Assistant Professor, Art Department, New Mexico State University. Education Annex, 123 Grant Avenue.
