The Photography of Charles Sheeler: American Modernist
January 14, 2005 - May 01, 2005
Although Charles Sheeler (1883–1965) ranks as one of America’s pioneers
of photography as well as one of the 20th century’s master photographers,
his work in this medium has been exhibited far less often than that of his peers,
such as Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand. The Photography of Charles Sheeler:
American Modernist presents approximately 60 works—selected by co-curators
Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr., Filles Mora, and Karen Haas—that showcase each
of the artist’s major series of photographs, such as his amazing views
of lower Manhattan, the Ford Motor Company River Rouge plant, and photographs
of American industry created for Fortune magazine. All of the works are on loan
from the Lane Collection, the owner of the artist’s photographic estate.
